Find my direction

Use this path when you have plenty of possible goals but little confidence that any of them are yours. Begin with the shape of an ordinary day, then look at fulfilment, uncertainty and the effect work has on you. Finish with a small project that can teach you more than another round of abstract planning.

Suggested routes through material saved to explore. I haven’t read or watched everything here yet. The order and prompts are editorial suggestions based on available source text, excerpts, descriptions and synopses; they are not personal ratings or claims of completed viewing.

  1. Start with a way of living

Thompson’s letter turns the usual career question around: consider the life before choosing the job. Starting here gives you something more personal than a title or milestone against which to judge the rest of the path.

    Pause & try

Describe an ordinary Tuesday you would welcome. Include people, pace, surroundings and the kind of effort you want to make.

  2. Give fulfilment some detail

Cohen’s framework helps turn that imagined day into a closer examination of work and the conditions around it. Use it to distinguish what is missing from what merely looks attractive at a distance.

    Pause & try

Name two conditions that make work satisfying for you. For each, recall a real occasion when it was present.

  3. Make room for an unfinished story

Jobs’s commencement speech adds a life story to the frameworks. Read his retrospective account alongside your uncertainty: a coherent story told afterwards is different from knowing the right move beforehand.

    Pause & try

Which interest keeps returning without an obvious payoff? Write down one way to explore it without needing to justify your whole future.

  4. Ask who the work will make you

    Career Advice →

    Collected by The Unintuitive ↗

Marlinspike asks how a career changes the person doing it. This is a useful check on the appealing future you have sketched: the daily habits of a role matter as much as its rewards.

    Pause & try

Compare two possible directions. What would each train you to notice, value and spend your days doing?

  5. Turn direction into a project

A Project of One Own →

    Collected by The Unintuitive ↗

A Project of One’s Own brings the route back to direct experience. A personally meaningful project can test curiosity and commitment before you make a much larger decision about your life.

    Pause & try

Choose a two-week project that produces something you can show or use. Define its smallest finished version and the first session.

After the five stops

Take it into your own life.

Keep the Tuesday description beside your project. After two weeks, record what gave you energy, what you avoided and what surprised you. Revise the direction from that evidence; you do not need to turn the experiment into a permanent identity.
